Recently there has been a growing interest in ensuring the safety of cosmetic ingredients following the increasing interest in personal care, beauty and hygiene products. Consumers nowadays require objective assessments and safety information of cosmetic materials. Thus, the industrial world faces these challenges to satisfy the consumers¡¯ needs, including the rising demand for cosmetics development without animal experiments. Nevertheless, existing data from animal experiments in the past have played important roles in the safety assessment of cosmetic ingredients in these circumstances. Thus, for the safety evaluation of cosmetic ingredients, the required data can be secured from various toxicity-related databases. This outsourcing creates an easy step for understanding and processing of cosmetic ingredients¡¯ toxicity information. With regards to new and emerging cosmetic materials such as natural products and nanomaterials, an updated risk assessment guideline will also be needed from governing agencies. In the evaluation procedure, an alternative method for animal experiments are performed. These current global trends have significantly influenced the practice of safety evaluation. In this review, we summarized the study trends of cosmetic safety evaluation as well as the toxicity data collection for toxicity profiling of cosmetic ingredients.
